Injury Updates 2023 Preseason Week 2 vs. Cowboys

Seahawks.com Senior Reporter

Drew Lock arrived at his postgame press conference sporting a teal Ken Griffey Jr. Mariners jersey, a solid look for a Seattle athlete, and one that was the result of some teasing from DK Metcalf about Lock's game-day sartorial choices.

"DK during the week was like, 'Man, we've got to work on your swag coming into the building,'" Lock said. "I'm like, 'Dude, I'd like to think that my shoes will top anyone in this locker room, but yeah, OK, the jeans and maybe the shirt.' So it's like, 'We've got to talk about it this week.' I was like, 'All right, I'll be better, I'll be better.' So I threw a jersey on and a Titelist hat."

More important than the wardrobe, however, was the fact that Lock also came to the podium feeling healthy after a brief injury scare in the Seahawks' 22-14 preseason win over the Cowboys Saturday night.

Lock, who played the second quarter after taking over for starter Geno Smith, was hit low after making a throw, a hit that drew a roughing the passer penalty. Lock finished the drive but was limping a bit, then after being evaluated by athletic trainers, he did not play the rest of the game, a departure from the plan for him to "play a ton," as Seahawks coach Pete Carroll put it.

While Lock didn't return to the game, after completing 5 of 6 passes for 119 yards in one quarter, all indications are that he is fine and will be able to play in next week's preseason finale in Green Bay.

"It's good," Lock said. "It'll be all right. I think it was just a precautionary thing."

Said Carroll, "It sounds like he's going to be fine after the evaluation. He got a little bit of a strain in the back of his knee, it got hyperextended a little bit, but there's no damage, so they think that he'll play next week."

In other injury news, linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who came off the physically unable to perform list, did not play, but was able to go through a thorough pregame workout with the team.

"It's really frustrating for him right now, he's so close to being back out there. This will be a really good week for him. He's ready to practice hard and go. This will be maybe that first week that we can start to break him into team reps and stuff like that. The process of getting him in the walkthrough has really allowed him to get there. So we're really fired up about him getting back out. It's hard for him watching us play when he's not part of it."

Rookie Devon Witherspoon continues to be out with a hamstring injury, but will hopefully start running more this week, Carroll said.

"I'm going to be surprised if Spoon isn't running a lot this week," Carroll said, noting they're looking at his recovery on a three-week basis with the season opener in mind. Carroll added Witherspoon will hopefully participate in the team's walkthroughs this coming week as well.

Receiver Dee Eskridge, who injured his knee in last week's game, "jogged a little bit" this week, Carroll said, and is "not in terrible shape," but is still probably a couple of weeks away.

The only other injury reported coming out of the game was to receiver Cody Thompson who, as Carroll said, "banged his shoulder" after making a sideline grab for a 32-yard gain.
