Reporter questions Zach Johnson after Fred Couples previously stated ‘Cam Young will be in Italy’

On Tuesday, the United States team announced the Ryder Cup captain’s picks for Rome. Zach Johnson chose Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Sam Burns to join the automatic qualifiers Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Brian Harman, and Wyndham Clark.

Among the players who weren’t selected was Cameron Young. The 26-year-old finished in the top 10 of four of the past seven majors and just a week ago was listed as -1000 favorite to make the team. Additionally, United States team assistant captain Fred Couples said on his Sirius XM “The Fred Couples Show,” that “Cam Young will be in Italy.”

Despite being the highest-ranked player in the Ryder Cup standings to not make the team, Young didn’t have as strong of a season as he would have liked. The big hitter failed to finish in the top 5 during the entirety of 2023 and only finished better than seventh once, at the John Deere Classic, where he finished sixth.

Zach Johnson was asked about Couples’ comment during his press conference on Tuesday, and said the comment was made “kind of in jest”.

“All of my phone calls were difficult. That goes without saying. It’s part of what I was warned about when it came to those and my vice-captains that have sat in this seat before,” Johnson said. “It did keep me up at night having to make those phone calls, specifically Cam. Phenomenal player, better person. He was nothing but class.

“Yeah, I know what was said, but I think that was a while back. It was kind of in jest,” Johnson said. “It is what it is.”

Young will join Keegan Bradley and Lucas Glover as players who had a strong case to be in Rome but will have to watch the Ryder Cup from home instead.

On Tuesday, the United States Ryder Cup team was revealed, which has sparked debate in the world of golf.

Captain Zach Johnson announced his captain’s picks: Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns, and Justin Thomas.

Most of the debate has surrounded the inclusion of Justin Thomas, who had a poor season, finishing 71st in the FedEx Cup standings and missing five of his last eight cuts of the year. Keegan Bradley, Cameron Young, and Lucas Glover all had a solid case to be chosen but were passed up in favor of JT’s experience in both Ryder and President’s Cups.

Vice Captain Fred Couples, who at one point said, “Cam Young will be in Italy,” appeared on Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio to talk about the picks.

“I’ve got 50 texts today, why two or three guys aren’t on the team. And I don’t have an answer for that. The only answer I have is, this is the team, and the team has spoken.

“And if the team likes another guy a little bit better than that guy who didn’t win six tournaments and do all this, then, then no one has a problem with any of it. And I think the JT thing is the strongest pick. That was a no-brainer. The analytics would say no, the way he plays golf, said yes. One of the things JT can do is he can dissect the golf course. That’s what we’re counting on.”

Since the picks have been released, the U.S. team has been accused of being a “boys club” by fans, media, and even Keegan Bradley said he felt like an “outsider.”

“I’ve always been an outsider in the sport, but I have tried to get closer to the guys I thought would be on the team. I feel like moving forward I’m going to have to automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup,” Bradley said.

Couples classifying Thomas as “the strongest pick” and a “no-brainer” will likely raise some eyebrows due to his lackluster 2023 results. There’s no denying that all eyes will be on the two-time major champion when play begins in Rome next month.

The Daily Mail is reporting that the PGA Tour and the PIF are preparing to reveal a new global golf tour that will have players from both the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour, and LIV competing in an 18-event series around the world.

The report states that the three tours will all operate independently in 2024, with the changes set to take place in 2025.

The details are sparse, but it would appear the players could play on all three tours, with the 18 events being invitationals. Roughly 12 of the 18 events would be in the United States in this proposal in order to “recognize the pre-eminence of the PGA Tour.”

With 18 events plus the four majors, it would be difficult to envision the top players in the world playing many more than those 22 events.

The report also states that the prize pool for each event would be around $20 million, and “American investment bank Allen and Co have been engaged to work out the details of the prize fund with the Saudis.”

These talks between officials on all three tours are ongoing and would require player approval.

On Tuesday, the United States team Ryder Cup picks were announced. Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Brian Harman, and Wyndham Clark had already qualified for the team via the Ryder Cup points list, but the six remaining captain’s picks have been debated for weeks.

Zach Johnson ultimately chose Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Sam Burns to join the team, which many fans and some players have taken issue with.

Among those players is Keegan Bradley. The 37-year-old has not been on a Ryder Cup team since 2012 and was hoping to secure a spot in 2023 due to his strongest season in recent memory. He won the ZOZO Championship in October of 2022 and then the Travelers Championship, which was a “designated event,” just a few months ago.

While speaking with Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis, the former PGA Champion said he believes he will have to automatically qualify for the team if he wants to be invited to the Ryder Cup in future years due to his position as an “outsider in the sport.”

“I’ve always been an outsider in the sport, but I have tried to get closer to the guys I thought would be on the team. I feel like moving forward I’m going to have to automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup.”

There’s no doubt that Bradley has outplayed Justin Thomas this season, but Johnson obviously felt as though JT couldn’t be left off the team.
